ST BEDE'S COLLEGE HONOURS POCKETS CRITERIA
BACKGROUND
What does a Basketball pocket represent? Sporting pockets are awarded to recognise students who have represented the school at senior level, and who have met the standards set by their sport and by the school.
WHO ADMINISTERS THE AWARDING OF A POCKET? The awarding of a pocket is administered by the St Bede’s College Director of Sport and requires an individual to meet the basketball pocket criteria outlined below. It is not a decision made by the SBC Basketball Club. However, input from the Senior A Coach, Manager and the SBC Basketball Club Chair is welcomed prior to the awarding of pockets to individuals. To gain a pocket, a student must not only fulfil requirements of length and level of performance but also of quality i.e. Pockets are awarded to individuals who have brought honour to St Bede’s College. This is shown not just through excellence in their sport, but through their behaviour, attitude and commitment to their chosen sport. Their sportsmanship on and off the field, their sense of fair play and their dedication to their team and the College.
CRITERIA
Recipients of a St Bede’s College Basketball Pocket MUST reach the following two criteria:
Must be a member of the St Bede’s Senior A Basketball Team
Must be a role model on and off the field and adhere to the SBC Sport Code of Conduct and the College’s attendance policy
As well as ONE or MORE of the following criteria:
played in end of year tournament
received one of end of season awards (at senior level)
played for two seasons
selected at regional and/or national level
Expanded notes for criteria:
To be eligible for a pocket at St Bede’s College a student must be a member of the Senior A Basketball Team. Some exceptional circumstance may arise, where a student is playing well beyond the level that St Bede’s can provide at Senior A level. Awarding of a pocket in this situation is at the discretion of the Director of Sport.
Behavioural and attendance criteria - Students will be a role model on and off the field. On-court refers to Basketball games and trainings where students are expected to attend all trainings and support the coach and management. Behaviour at games and practices will be in-line with The Canterbury Basketball Association and the St Bede’s Sport Code of Conduct policy. Off-court includes on school grounds or in public. This includes behaviour and attendance in the classroom as well as behaviour in the public domain, which includes social media.
A Basketball pocket will be awarded if a player has played for two seasons for the Senior A Team. However, they must also have attained Criteria 2 – Behavioural Policy
Note: The decision of the awarding of a pocket for achievements is at the discretion of the Director of Sport with input from the Senior A Coach and Manager. Students’ MUST also attain Criteria 2 – Behavioural Policy to attain a pocket
ST BEDE'S COLLEGE CLUB CAP CRITERIA
BACKGROUND A cap as an appearance for a select team such as a school, region or international team in sports. The term dates back from a practice in the United Kingdom of awarding a cap (meaning an item of headgear) to every player in an international match of Association Football; however, the act of awarding a cap is now international and applies to other sports. At St Bede’s College, a cap is awarded to recognise service in a sports team at senior level.
WHO ADMINISTERS THE AWARDING OF A BASKETBALL CAP?
Unlike pockets, Basketball caps are awarded by the St Bede’s College Basketball Club to acknowledge a student’s appearance and service to the Senior A basketball team. Attendance and service to the team broadly covers a range of criteria including the minimum number of games the student has played on behalf of the team, attendance at practices support of the coaching and management team through to role modelling and fair play.
CRITERIA
Recipients of a St Bede’s College Basketball cap MUST meet the following criteria:
played minimum of 12 Senior games in one year (either starting 5 or minimum 10 minutes per game)
played in Senior team that goes to end of year tournament
be a role model on and off the field
adhere to SBC attendance and code of conduct policies
attend all practices and being supportive of the coach and management
Year 11 and older
WHEN ARE CAPS AWARDED? Caps will be awarded at the end of first full season when become eligible. Caps can be awarded at an earlier date should there be a significant event where caps should be worn.
HOW ARE CAPS WORN? Historically caps are folded and placed in the upper pocket of the student’s blazer when worn around the school. Boys wear their caps on special occasions as requested by the school or club.
DEFINITION OF A ROLE MODEL A role model is a student who serves as an example of the values, attitudes, and behaviours associated with that role. Students are expected to be a role model on and off the court, including in the classroom and social media
